Congratulations! Denis Crottet, PhD student working in Bern and Lausanne within the NCCR Co-Me has received the 2005 research award of the Swiss Society for Biomedical Engineering (SSBE). With this prize he is honored for his outstanding achievements during his thesis, entitled "A force-sensing device for assistance in soft-tissue balancing during knee surgery." abstract
The technological basics of Denis Crottets project are the result of the strong collaboration between the teams of Prof. Hannes Bleuler at the Laboratoire de Systèmes Robotiques, EPF Lausanne, and Prof. Lutz Nolte at the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics, MEM Research Center, Bern. Further research teams, even from Germany, were involved in validating and improving the development of the device.
As a member of the group "Smart Surgical Instrumentation" at the MEM Research Center, Denis Crottet is now going to finish his PhD. He will also organise the transfer of the device to clinics being partners of the Co-Me network. Asked about his plans for the future, he says: "Research projects having a direct medical application are for me the most gratifying. Therefore, I will first look for a position in a company active in biomedical engineering, although I stay open to any scientific challenge."
