Guoyan Zheng wins CAOS 2006 award
Best Paper Award given for his podium presentation at the annual CAOS-International meeting.

Congratulations! Co-Me member Dr. Guoyan Zheng has received the 2006 Best Paper Award at the annual CAOS-International meeting in Montréal. He is honored for his presentation titled "Accurate and robust recovery of distal locking holes in computerassisted intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures".

Dr. Zheng presented a robust and accurate two-stage approach for automatic recovery of distal locking holes in computer-assisted intramedullary nailing of femoral shaft fractures. The proposed approach does not depend on any special hardware setup, and can be integrated with any computer-assisted surgery (CAS) system including both free-hand surgical navigation systems and medical robotics, as long as two calibrated and registered fluoroscopic images of the inserted IMN are available. The proposed approach is very robust, and works well even when there are projections from outliers such as interventional instrument and cables.

Dr. Guoyan Zheng is partner of Co-Me project 10 "Computer Assistance in Orthopaedic Surgery" and head of the group for Orthopaedic Navigation, Division of Surgical Technology of the MEM Research Center for Orthopaedic Surgery, University of Bern.
