He has been elected to co-direct the recently founded Spine Research Center which is part of the Artificial Organ (ARTORG) Center for Biomedical Engineering Research of the University of Bern together with PD Dr. Paul Heini, head of the Department of Spine Surgery of the University Hospital Insel.

In his new function, Stephen Ferguson will be able to focus his research on the design and development of novel approaches for the treatment of spinal motion segment disorders as well as on the improved diagnosis and treatment of osteoporotic fractures in the spine, and topics related to understanding the degeneration processes and eventual biological regeneration of the intervertebral disc.

The new chair was made possible by the Medical Faculty of the University of Bern, together with the University Hospital (Inselspital) and affiliated research institutes.
