At the recent EuroSpine 2009 Congress in Warsaw, members of the
research group of PD Dr. Stephen Ferguson were presented with the
prestigious Grammer European Spine Journal Award, granted for the best
basic science paper published during the previous year in the
journal. The award is one of the most significant prizes in the field
of orthopaedic research and the selection is based on a rigorous
peer-review. The research was closely linked to themes explored in the
Co-Me
Phase 2 project 9/5 and the ongoing Phase 3
project 4/1.
The title of the work from D. Haschtmann, J.V. Stoyanov, P. Gédet
and S.J. Ferguson is "Vertebral
endplate trauma induces disc cell apoptosis and promotes organ
degeneration in vitro". In this study, the potential causes of
post-traumatic disc degeneration were investigated in detail in a
novel organ culture model and valuable insights were gained into the
induced apoptotic and catabolic processes initiated by spinal
fractures. The results of the work formed the foundation for an
ongoing basic science project funded by the Swiss National Science
Foundation and an upcoming European Commission network project.
