STARTUPS.CH Award 2010 for AEON Scientific

AEON Scientific, a start-up project of ETH Zurich that is related to the Co-Me Ophthalmology project, has won the national Swiss Startups.ch Award 2010. Out of over 100 participants, they were selected by a combined voting from both an expert jury and the online public. The team has been awarded a CHF 50'000 grant for the development of their business idea, the commercialisation of a technology for electromagnetic guidance of micro objects.

The focus is on wireless control of micro instruments within the human body in order to enable new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. In their video the researchers are presenting the concept of small electromagnetically steerable inserts for the eye that serve as reservoirs for medication and are left in the eye for long-term treatments.

Intraocular inserts are a compelling technology because of their minimally invasive nature and their ability to treat a variety of diseases within the eye for extended time periods. The mobility of the intraocular inserts will allow a greater degree of spatial precision when treating diseases, which will in turn enable the reduction of drug concentrations and help minimise side effects.
