SNSF Picture of the Month: Robot performs virtual autopsies
The forensic robot 'Virtobot'

A photograph related to the Co-Me project of Professor Michael Thali, University of Bern, has been selected as Picture of the Month by the Swiss National Science Foundation. It shows Virtobot, a forensic high-tech helpmate which is used to perform virtual autopsies at the University of Bern's Institute of Forensic Medicine. Developed as part of the NCCR Co-Me, the industrial robot provides forensic doctors with a high precision, three-dimensional image of cadavers. For the first time ever cadavers can be digitally preserved and autopsies conducted again, even years later, for instance when new evidence turns up in an unsolved case.
