Cranio-maxillofacial surgery

Surgery in the cranial and maxillofacial region is technically challenging and its outcome has great impact on a patient's quality of life. Surgical procedures in this area, therefore, require careful planning and precise execution. The goal of this project is to develop computer-aided tools to facilitate the planning of a surgical procedure and realisation of that plan.

A custom software environment that virtually performs osteotomies, places distraction devices, and relocates bone segments, has been developed for planning this type of surgical procedures. Once completed, the surgical plan is loaded into the navigation application for intra-operative guidance. The surgeon is aided in accurately positioning the bone segments according to the preoperative plan.
