Navigation support allows the treatment of deep-seated cranial or skull-base tumor by brachytherapy.

Brachytherapy planning and navigation

The treatment of tumours in the frontal or lateral skull-base with interstitial brachytherapy requires high targeting accuracy of the needles to avoid harming vital anatomical structures. To enable safe placement of the needles in this area, we developed an image-guided planning and navigation system for brachytherapy. The system consists of a two-stage positioning mechanism, an infrared tracking camera (Optotrak), a non-invasive head-fixation frame with a vacuum cushion, and a computed tomography (CT) based computer-aided planning and navigation software, which provides intuitive real-time visual guidance for the fine-adjustment of the mechanical degrees of freedom.
