14 Advanced processing of facial soft and hard tissue
Surgical procedures of the face always change the soft tissue either directly or subsequent to the surgery upon the underlying bone. In the reconstructive surgery we are going to integrate computer-assisted surgery (CAS) planning concerning the soft tissue. The planning to be based on 3D data needs not only the modalities such as CT and MRI but also effective surface representations of the face. Here we have developed holography with typical acquisition times of nano-seconds. The development of a laser system to cut bone and cartilage enables precise osteotomies of complex geometry. The computer guidance gives rise to interventions unattained by mechanical surgical instruments.
- Displaying 3D shaped faces

The face in its 3D shape is acquired with high precision using different methods including holography.
- Monitoring facial soft tissue surgery

For planning purposes, the results of individual surgical interventions can be simulated using models based on the registered volumetric data (CT and MRI) and surface data. This knowledge directly supports the monitoring of facial soft tissue surgery.
- CO2-laser cutting without side effects

For the clinical practice, cutting procedures based on computerassisted laser systems without any carbonisation effects.
