11/3 Assessment of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries
Referring to the World Health Organisation (WHO), cardiovascular diseases
led to more cases of death in Switzerland than those in succession of
cancer, accidents, Alzheimers disease and HIV together.
Heart attacks, the most commonly cardiovascular disease, mainly arise
from an insufficient blood supply of the heart muscle in succession of
atherosclerosis in the coronary arteries.
Existing tools for atherosclerosis detection and quantification in multi
slice computer tomography (MSCT) datasets have shown an inadequate
performance referring to their correctness, reproducibility and error rate.
These tools mainly concentrate on the measurement of calcified plaques as
due to the contained Calcium, they are clearly visible in the datasets.
Lipid plaques are hard to detect and therefore are normally not taken into
account by plaque measurement tools.
